What is the Lunar Calendar?
The Chinese lunar calendar, also known as the agricultural calendar, is a traditional Chinese calendar system. It is a lunisolar calendar that uses the lunar phase cycle (synodic month) for months while also accounting for the solar year, adding leap months to reconcile the two.
The difference between the lunar and solar calendars: the solar calendar is purely based on Earth's orbit around the Sun; the lunar calendar is lunisolar, considering both moon phases and seasonal changes. Traditional Chinese festivals such as Spring Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival, and Dragon Boat Festival follow the lunar calendar.

FAQ
Q: Why does the lunar calendar have leap months?
A: The lunar calendar uses the synodic month (about 29.53 days) as a month, making 12 months about 354 days, which is about 11 days shorter than the solar year (about 365.25 days). To keep the lunar calendar aligned with seasons, a leap month is added every 2-3 years, making that year have 13 months.
Q: How do I find my lunar birthday?
A: Use this tool to convert your solar (Gregorian) birthday to a lunar date. Note that lunar months start from Zhengyue (the first month).
Q: Is the zodiac based on the lunar or solar calendar?
A: The zodiac is based on the lunar calendar, with the Chinese New Year (Spring Festival) as the dividing point. For example, before February 10, 2024 (Spring Festival) is the Year of the Rabbit, and after is the Year of the Dragon.
